ClaSP Feature for June 2009

June SWAP Feature: ClaSP

What is ClaSP?  ClaSP (the Chlamydia Screening Project) is a prevention program that focuses on Chlamydia screening and treatment. It primarily targets young women in juvenile justice settings. Long term Goal: to decrease the prevalence of CT infection in the female juvenile justice population by 20%. This project is supported in part by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the California Department of Public Health, STD Control Branch.

ClaSP provides routine Chlamydia screening for high-risk adolescents through partnerships between the juvenile justice system and the STD control programs of local health departments. Chlamydia screening and treatment is provided to all eligible youths at juvenile justice sites at booking or as close to booking as possible. The ClaSP project uses urine-based testing by the local public health laboratories. ClaSP attempts to ensure the rapid notification of test results and provides appropriate treatment for those individuals who test positive. If a juvenile tests positive but is released prior to treatment, follow-up with appropriate referrals is conducted. Medical services are typically provided through the county system or outside contractors of medical services.

A review of health care in the juvenile justice system in California indicated that few facilities screen a high proportion of their booked population for Chlamydia infection. In order to ensure the cost-effectiveness of this screening program, ClaSP funds screening in those facilities where the prevalence of CT infection is greater than 5% among booked females. The ClaSP project assesses the prevalence of Chlamydia among high-risk adolescents in the juvenile justice population. Data are obtained on the number booked into selected facilities, gender, race/ethnicity, booking date and date of birth. This service assists the state in determining the feasibility of candidate STD national performance measures and continues to provide valuable performance measurement data which is required in order to receive federal funding.
